Full bio

Carey Ransom is a serial entrepreneur, and has been involved as a CEO, co-founder, founder and senior executive in 7 companies in the last 8 years in Orange County, with well over $100 million in venture capital raised among them, and both successes and failures. He believes in the founder attitude - a commitment, ownership and passion that drives him whether he starts or joins a company. Most recently he led and sold RealPractice, funded by Miramar Venture Partners and Rustic Canyon Partners, to ReachLocal (NASDAQ: RLOC), after joining the company in 2009 as CEO to find the next phase of growth opportunity for it. In the process he built a ground-up startup initiative in the company that surpassed the legacy business less than a year after its launch. He separated the legacy business, sold its assets, and completed the sale of the rest of the company 7 months later! He is presently leading and building the small business marketing system SaaS business within ReachLocal. Carey is a Midwest transplant to Southern California, and attributes much of his success and attitude to his background in his family's 140-year-old retail business.

His career spans executive roles in product, business development, strategy, marketing, sales and corporate development.  Prior to RealPractice, he was Vice President of Business Development at Brand Affinity Technologies (BAT), a startup in the Internet advertising and celebrity endorsement business.  Carey was Vice President, Product, Marketing and Corporate Development at WebVisible, forging new partnerships with companies like AT&T & Microsoft, creating new products and lines of business, and helping WebVisible triple its revenue during his tenure. While at MessageRite (acquired by Frontbridge Technologies), Carey was Vice President of Sales & Marketing, leading the online communication storage and security start-up’s business, which was eventually acquired by Microsoft in 2005. He is an industry innovator and quickly ascends to a thought-leader position in any industry he joins. He has spoken at software, search and online media conferences such as INBOX, The BIA/Kelsey Group, OMMA, and the Search Insider Summit.  Carey’s expertise is identifying new product and technology initiatives, partnership and revenue opportunities, and leveraging market trends.

Carey is an MBA graduate of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where he was a Welsh Fellow and Knapp Venture Competition Winner. In addition, he holds a Certificate of E-Commerce from Loyola University Chicago and a B.A. in Economics from Indiana University, where he was Phi Beta Kappa.
