After being bloated with under-performing assets, Yahoo is definitely going on a strict diet. CEO Carol Bartz has been shutting down units left and right. The latest is its video advertising unit, which was created through the acquisition of Maven Networks for 160 million dollars last year. Seems Bartz is sending a message to the world:Yahoo time to slim down.

YouTube launched an online Journalism school of sorts for anyone wanting to learn how to be a reporter. The “YouTube Reporters Center” has tips from CBS Katie Couric, Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, and other top journalists, sharing their wisdom on what it takes to get a good story out or do a good interview. It’s a great idea – a repository of advice and lessons. It is a lot like VatorNews’s library of lessons and advice on how to be an entrepreneur. Do you want to be a great entrepreneur – make sure to watch our “Lessons Learned” channel and hear from the seasoned entrepreneurs.

Speaking of entrepreneur lessons, Vinod Khosla isn’t one to ramble… but he has bumbled. The founder of Khosla Ventures, former VC at blue-chip firm Kleiner Perkins and co-founder of Sun Microsystems – recently received a “visionary award” .His speech was notable – not because it was an impressive three minutes long, but because of the simple truth in it.  No one is a visionary.

MELIZA!! Excellent show! I must say Carol Bartz is not kidding around. Shes definitely taking aim to reduce Yahoo! My assumption is definitely to increase it's performance since Google has been gaining ground for some time. Very interesting story indeed. :)

Although the label "visionary" is one that should not be given out easily, Khosla is just being modest. If it is as simple as bumbling around until something works, then many would have that level of success. One has to innovate ahead of the pack a lot. Certainly there are guys, like Jobs, who quickly synthesize information and trends, and see a little more creatively before most others in their field.

Short, sweet, and to the point! Perfect and informative piece. I especially like Vinod's take on entrepreneurship; keep failing until you succeed.

I do love one quote I heard somewhere, "success is getting up one more time than you fall". Good food for the human spirit.

@Kevin: Thanks! It is quite interesting for Yahoo but Bartz doesn't have much of a choice at this point.

@Gary: It's one big step to innovate...especially innovating ahead of the pack. I agree with this quote. I think there are several who quit once they fail not realizing that mistakes only build character. It is not what happens to us in life but how we respond to certain situations. Success is standing up after a fall, wiping the dust off your knees, and picking up where you left off but with a stronger attitude.

@Meliza: While it may seem a bizarre analogy, the issue reminds me of the "Serenity Prayer", you know the part "Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference." Yes, I agree the courage to get back up is needed, but you also must have something worth getting up for, and figuring that part out is not so simple.

@Meliza: I think we're really in basic agreement, because really both parts are important for success, the courage AND the vision (wisdom + innovation). I think it applies to every entrepreneur at some level, but only the guys like Jobs and Khosla who consistently succeed on a grand scale can earn the "visionary" title.

@Meliza: The title of the most stubborn entrepreneur would not be nearly as coveted. Unfortunately, you might have to hunt through the tent cities for the most deserving candidates :)

@Gary - funny but true. Thanks. This thread is timely, given the courage and vision of those that decided open rebellion against the establishment would be a good thing. If they had failed, they would have been drawn and quartered (a bit worse than living in tent city). But since they were successful, we can celebrate Independence Day :)

@Gary: Excellent point. But do you think wisdom automatically comes with vision? I mean the average person doesn't take that step to even have a vision and a true leader cannot complete his vision without wisdom. Our dreams determine our destiny, right? So when you wish to accomplish your goal you must have a mission, a hope, and most of all a vision. So,thanks for the "bizarre" analogy, which inspires me to share one of my favorite quotes found in Proverbs 29:18 "Without vision, people perish" which by the way, let me say that it takes wisdom to follow anything written in the Bible :-)

@Meliza: I think I'm getting in deep, way over my head, but I'll try to answer your question. As I said, I think every entrepreneur has to exercise some vision and wisdom to increase his chances of success, if only to know which flea market to set up in tomorrow. (Perhaps he can survive without innovation, but it would certainly increase his chances.) I was speaking of ordinary human talents, nothing of biblical proportions (of which I have no authority to speak). Now "VISIONARY" is a whole different level reserved for the best of the best, requiring courage, wisdom and innovation (or you can call it vision). But, still, I think the test of "wisdom" only applies within the context of the relevant field of business and technology. So my answer to your question is - pretty much - yes, but I don't know if wisdom "comes with" vision, but they would seem to go together, but only the ordinary human sort of wisdom. Wisdom being the ability to exercise judgement in interpreting and acting on the opportunities that you perceive.
