SouthEnd Dentistry

Dental veneers or porcelain veneers are another cosmetic dentistry option offered by qualified dental professionals.  Veneers were first invented by California dentist Charles Pincus in 1928 to be used for a film shoot for temporarily changing the appearance of actors' teeth.

Veneers are custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve tooth and smile appearance. The shells are bonded to the front of the teeth.  Porcelain veneers resist stains better and more closely mimic the sheen of natural teeth.

Resin veneers require the removal of less tooth surface before bonding.  Veneers are desired to cover discolored teeth, worn teeth that are uneven or chipped or that have gaps, and cover other imperfections.

Several appointments may be required, and careful consideration must be given to the procedure, as removal of surface enamel is necessary to gain a strong bond with veneers. Follow-up visits may be required to check the efficacy of the bond.

Today, veneers and their bond can be expected to last 10 to 30 years; however, replacement may be necessary due to various types of damage which can occur. Veneers are a cosmetic improvement in that they can give your teeth a more natural appearance, and are an attractive option to crowns.

However, the procedure to get a veneer is not reversible, and may cause some sensitivity.  The dentists at SouthEnd Dentistry will help you consider the pros and cons of this popular cosmetic procedure.
