The main Edinburgh-Glasgow rail line will be electrified by construction companies Costain and Morgan Sindall…

The contract, which is worth £250m, will see new overhead electric lines installed over the 45-mile stretch of track on behalf of Network Rail.

New rail infrastructure works will also be installed at Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley Stations.

Extensions to the platforms at Croy, Falkirk High, Polmont, and Linlithgow will also occur.

In January, both Costain and Morgan Sindall were awarded a £5m design contract to develop a detailed scope, programme, and target price.

The contract forms part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme to electrify the route by the end of 2016, which is worth £742m.

The works package for Morgan Sindall will be worth £113m. End-of-contract losses or profits will be shared between Morgan Sindall and Network Rail under the terms of the agreement.

Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “This £250m contract marks a significant milestone in the EGIP project, which will provide 20% quicker journey times, 30% more capacity and a complete overhaul of stations in both cities, with the new-look Haymarket station already completed on time and under budget and the planned transformation of Queen Street station into a 21st century transport hub.”
