Dr. Rainer Gruessner has had an impact on the field of transplantation surgery. He has developed many firsts in pancreas, intestinal and liver transplantation: in 1988, he was involved in the first split pancreas transplant. In 1997, while serving as a tenured professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota, he developed a technique for living donor intestinal transplants, a technique that surgeons use to this day. In 2000, he performed te first laparoscopic partial pancreatectomy and nephrectomy from a living donor.

In 1998, Dr. Rainer Gruessner performed the first preemptive living donor liver transplant on a baby with oxalosis. Over the subsequent decade, the patient’s kidney function remained stable.

Dr. Rainer Gruessner has contributed to the medical literature with over 600 publications, abstracts and book chapters. He has edited two textbooks, with a third textbook on the way. He is married and has two children.
