Mommy deals win big as Juice in the City raises funds and snaps up fellow mom-deals site

Months after raising $6 million in a round of funding led by Tandem Entrepreneurs and HU Investments, mom-oriented daily deals site Juice in the City announced Wednesday that it has acquired the assets of fellow mom-driven daily deals site Gaggle of Chicks.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed, other than the fact that the acquisition was made in cash and gives Juice in the City access to Gaggle of Chicks’ subscriber base.

Launched in May 2010, Juice in the City has heeded the call to find deals for moms.  It’s little wonder, when you consider the fact that moms are responsible for some $2 trillion in consumer spending in the U.S. and control roughly 80% of all household expenses.  As it turns out—and this was very surprising to me—kids need shit.  Lots of it!  They practically shred through clothes like the Incredible Hulk, and at some point you need to keep them entertained (or at least occupied, and making them dig holes will only buy you so much time), so you have to get all the little toys and knick-knacks.  And they’re little germ farms to boot, so you have to buy all the sanitizers and household disinfectants you can get your hands on.

So it’s no wonder Juice in the City is on the move when other daily deal sites may be starting to wan in the face of stiff competition from Groupon and LivingSocial, whose innovations in tech and mobile have put them ahead of the crowd.

Juice in the City gets its mom deals through the use of a voluntary on-the-ground salesforce of “momtrepreneurs”—local moms who source, vet, and write about deals in their neighborhoods.  And moms have an incentive to help identify solid deals in their area, as they have the opportunity to earn money through the deals they help make.

The acquisition of Gaggle of Chicks, which offers deals in New York City and Houston (as well as nationwide deals), brings Juice in the City’s market reach to 20 cities.  Previously limited to California, the acquisition gives Juice in the City a new, significant presence in New York City.
