Website and animated series, "Martha & Friends," paradoxically encourages kids to be creative online

Look who has a new animated version of herself. A2 entertainment, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and AOL have teamed up to produce “Martha & Friends,” a new online animated multimedia series for kids based on the creative stylings of Martha Stewart.

The series of 26 short-form webisodes features Martha Stewart as a crafty, fun-loving ten-year-old who, with her friends and her two dogs, has fun and solves problems through crafts. And in an amazing feat, the animation team managed to make even a ten-year-old Martha Stewart appear frigid and domineering. The episodes will air bi-weekly starting today on Marthaandfriends.com via AOL Kids. The website also includes games, project ideas, and a meet-the-characters section.

“Kids are extraordinarily imaginative and we are so glad to be part of a project that encourages, celebrates and rewards their innate creativity and curiosity,” said Martha Stewart, in a statement. “Ever since I was a little girl I’ve had a passion for crafting and cooking and my hope is that this series will inspire a whole new generation of do-it-yourselfers.”

Naturally, you might be asking yourself whether it’s a bit counterproductive to encourage kids to get creative and use their imaginations by watching cartoons on their home computers. The definitive answer to your question is yes, it is. But, to be fair, the website also includes a list of craft ideas that kids can do at home with their parents’ help (which might clash with their parents’ plans if their parents stuck them on the computer to keep them occupied for a couple of hours).

In conjunction with the website’s launch, the Hallmark Channel will air a 30-minute version of the first webside, “Martha’s Fourth,” about the 4th of July and how Martha and her friends craft their way into raising funds for the town’s annual fireworks celebration. The episode will air July 3rd at 9 a.m.

The project was developed and produced by Aentertainment, which has also created the “Secret Millionaire’s Club” with billionaire Warren Buffet and “Gisele and the Green Team,” with supermodel Gisele Bundchen.
