The company notes that the round is not closed and it may raise an additional $6 million

DisplayLink, a provider of networked display technology for multi-monitor and USB-connected computing, on Tuesday announced that it has secured $8 million of a possible $14 million Series D round of funding, bringing its total raised to $68 million since. The investors for this round were not disclosed, butDisplayLink has previously raised funds from Atlas VentureBalderton CapitalDAG VenturesDFJ Esprit, and WTI.

Founded in 2003, DisplayLink’s semiconductor and software is used in PC accessories like wired and wireless USB graphics adapters, universal docking stations, monitors, and zero clients, to allow for multi-monitor computing, like connecting your laptop to a docking station so that you can work on a larger screen and stop slouching from huddling over your laptop.  DisplayLink’s product development focuses heavily on the SuperSpeed USB and Wireless-enabled categories. Some 80 million SuperSpeed-enabled devices will ship in 2011, according to a report from In-Stat, and DisplayLink is poised to capitalize on the trend.

Deloitte named DisplayLink the fourth-fastest growing EMEA company, and the company was also a CES 2011 Best of Innovation Award Honoree in the Enabling Technologies category for its Interactive Networked Graphics for SuperSpeed USB.

“Strong growth continues in our markets for USB graphics adapters, universal docking stations, and monitors in both the corporate and consumer segments,” said DisplayLink Chairman Graham O’Keeffe in a statement. “There are now close to four million USB graphics users, with SuperSpeed USB 3.0 catching on quickly. This financing will help DisplayLink to rapidly deliver compelling new products for these markets.”

The company plans to use the new funds to further develop its PC peripherals business, particularly in the zero-client computing category. The company raised an $8 million Series C round in 2009 from returning investors Atlas Venture, Balderton Capital, DAG Ventures, DFJ Esprit, and WTI, all of whom also participated in DisplayLink’s $24 million round in 2007. DisplayLink has also raised funds fromBenchmark Capital.
