Songkick goes mobile with concerts on iPhone

See which of your favorite artists are playing in your area with Songkick Concerts

Songkick, a website to discover upcoming concerts, announced Wednesday the launch of its iPhone app. Songkick Concerts is available for download from the App Store right now and it’s completely free.

Whether or not you’ve ever used Songkick before, the app immediately starts you off by scanning your phone’s iPod library for artists to track. Once this is done, it will display a personalized concert calendar based on the artists you listen to and your current location.

From there, you can look at certain artists specifically to see their entire tour, see the location of venues, mark whether you’ll be attending an event and more.

Naturally, former Songkick users can log in to their accounts to make their concert recommendations even more relevant. The Web service has for awhile now offered users a variety of options for tracking artists they love. While you can manually enter artists you want to know about, it’s much easier to import data from Pandora, Last.fm or iTunes. If you import with Last.fm, Songkick will even collect all your concert history and bundle it up on their own site.

Songkick says its app and Web service provide access to 100,000 concerts.

Though not garnering as much attention as consumer-facing services in the social media, gaming and e-commerce spaces, Songkick is in a good place, as the music industry continues to rely more on live performances than music sales for revenue intake. The company has raised a bit over $5 million in funding from Index Ventures, SoftTech VC, the Accelerator Group and Y Combinator.

Songkick for iPhone was built by a Danish development team called Shape, using the company’s public API.

Up until now, users could use an app called Gigkick to find shows in their area. Though not affiliated with Songkick, the app was able to import Songkick profiles with the open API, personalizing concert data for users.
