Google CEO Eric Schmidt to be replaced by co-founder; Techmeme to feature tweets alongside news

Eric Schmidt, who has led Google as CEO since 2001, will be replaced on April 4 by co-founder Larry Page.

 

In the same day as as the above news, Google also announced excellent financial results from the last quarter, but acknowledged that it continues to struggle with governments both in the U.S. and abroad.

Spurned by Groupon, Google is poised to launch its very own daily deals site called Google Offers.

Venture capitalists invested $21.8 billion in 3,277 deals in 2010, the most in a year since 2007, according to a MoneyTree report.

mSpot, a new music startup that lets users upload the music they own to the cloud, formally launched in Europe.

 

Postling, a new service that provides businesses with a dashboard for managing their social media presence, has raised $350,000 in seed financing from AngelList.

 

Qwiki, a company whose goal is to “forever improve the way people experience information,”  has closed an $8 million Series A round led by none other than Facebook co-founder and elusive billionaire Eduardo Saverin.

Yahoo7, the Yahoo! for Australia, has acquired group buying daily deals site Spreets, including its New Zealand operations. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A SunRun study finds that permitting and inspection processes in setting up solar power systems--bureaucratic red tape--are resulting in heavy costs to the consumer.

 

Techmeme will now be featuring news-breaking tweets as well as reaction tweets on its home page, alongside the traditional news stories.
