Updated Droid phone to be more in line with Nexus One, AT&T and T-Mobile device

Droid IncredibleVerizon Wireless on Thursday announced the newest HTC smartphone to come to its service, the Droid Incredible, a notable upgrade from the Motorola Droid released last November.

The biggest difference between the two phones comes downs to design type: the Motorola phone is a slider smartphone and the new HTC phone is a slate smartphone like the Nexus One and iPhone.

The HTC Droid Incredible also sports improved hardware specifications.

Like the Nexus One, the Droid Incredible will operate the latest Android operating system with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a 3.7 inch WVGA (480x800) AMOLED capacitive touch display. Though the Motorola Droid also featured a 3.7 inch screen, it definitely lagged behind these two phones since it runs on a 550Mhz processor.

No word yet on the storage capacity of the new phone, but, for comparison, the Nexus One comes with 512 MB of flash memory and a 4 GB Micro SD card (expandable to 32 GB).

Though the Nexus One and Motorola Droid both don 5 megapixel cameras, the Droid Incredible is the first phone on Verizon to feature an 8 megapixel camera. All employ flash.

Starting April 29, the HTC Droid Incredible will be available for $199.99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) with a new two-year Verizon contract. Pre-orders start at www.verizonwireless.com on April 19.

The Nexus One, according to Google, is slated for a Spring 2010 release on Verizon, but there have been no new updates saying just when that would happen. And only the rumor mill ever claims that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. Still, for users who want an elegant smartphone experience on Verizon Wireless, the HTC Droid Incredible looks like it will be a strong bet.
