Blogging service has more than doubled its numbers in a single year

Not only did Tumblr passed a big milestone on Tuesday, the social network did so with very little fanfare. In fact, there was not even a blogpost to make sure people knew about it!

The microblogging and social media platform has now reached 100 million blogs, according to the website's "About" page. The company also revealed that is has now seen a total of 44.6 billion posts on those blogs.

Tumblr has to feel pretty good about itself these days, considering that the the number of posts and blogs have more than doubled in a year. In March of last year, the site passed 20 billion posts, and in April it flew past 50 million blogs.

To put it another way: Tumblr took nearly five years to reach 20 billion posts, a feat it has since repeated in less than a single year. The company also stated that it saw 80,231,645 posts on Tuesday alone!

Any way you look at it, that is some seriously impressive growth.

Honestly, though, its not like Tumblr's success is coming out of nowhere, as the company has been rapidly gaining users over the past year as well. In November, Tumblr announced that the site had cracked the top 10 networks in the United States, coming it at number nine, with nearly 17 million people visiting the site globally every day and over 65 million per week.

The next question is, of course, can the company turn that growth, and that userbase, into real money through advertising? Finding the right way to successfully monetize is something that all of the social networks, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, have all been, or still are, grappling with. Numbers are just numbers, and nothing more, unless they can be translated into something more tangable.

Founded in 2007, the New York City-based website has raised a total of $125 million, including a $30 million round in December 2010 from Sequoia Capital, Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital, and an $85 million round of financing back in September 2011 from Greylock Partners and Insight Venture Partners, along with participation from The Virgin Group’s chief Richard Branson, Spark Capital and Sequoia Capital.

Vator has reached out to Tumblr for further comment, but have not yet heard back. We will update with any other information the company provides.

The 100 million blog milestone was first sighted on Tuesday by The Next Web, to which Tumblr confirmed the news.
