Word on the street is that those of you with an Apple iPhone will not be defaulting to Google Maps for long. Reports are coming out that Apple will drop Google Maps in iOS6 for an in-house app that’s is more in line with the Apple aesthetic.
9to5Mac reports that Apple is about to puts its purchase of Placebase, C3 Technologies, and Poly9 together for a map app update that will feature some snazzy 3D features.
It has been just a matter of time until Apple opted out of the Google family since they are smartphone competitors. This iOS discussion comes just after Apple dropped Google Maps in its latest version of iPhoto for iPad in early March.
The buzz about Apple getting into the mapping ecosphere has been in talks since 2009 when it bought Placeware. Then people new that Apple was ramping up in 2010 when the company acquired a provider of 3D mapping solutions, Poly9. Then, last year, Apple bought C3, a company that provides 3D mapping technology.
As people countdown to the next iOS update, people are also curious just how deep the Siri integration would be with this new mapping service since many people had some kinks detected in the iPhone and Google Map communication via Siri.
Apple is expected to reveal iOS 6 in mid-June at its World Wide Developers Conference.
