The SemTech Startup Competition is back by popular demand, and this year it’s sponsored by STI Americas, Web Media Brands (WEBM) Semanticweb.com and Vator. The contest seeks to identify, recognize and reward the best of the best, the most promising innovative seed-stage startups, Framework Programme 7 (FP7) Projects, NSF Funded and University Projects. It’s the perfect venue to show off new semantic technology products and innovations to an audience of potential investors, receive recognition from peers, gain media exposure, and potentially take home the coveted grand prize.
The Contest will consist of two rounds described in full below. The initial qualifying Round 1 will determine the 10 semi-finalists who will attend, exhibit and present at the 2011 SemTech Conference in San Francisco, June 5-9. Round 2 will be held live at the SemTech Conference on Wednesday June 8th and will determine and crown the grand prize winner.
Who should apply:
The contest is open to all seed-stage companies, FP7 Projects, NSF funded and University Projects that can provide at least a demonstrable “beta” product in the SemTech and or SemWeb space. Companies applying may not have received more than seed capital financing. The contest seeks to recognize and advance companies and projects with systems or applications that provide value and demonstrate great applications of semantics on either a small or large scale. Companies can be physically located anywhere in the world although they must have the financial means to attend the conference, (i.e. flights, hotel, etc. etc.) There is no fee to participate in Round One and if voted as one of the top 10 semi-finalists there is a $4,000 fee which includes a SemTech package of 1 Full Conference pass, a Table Top exhibition space on the exhibit floor Tues. and Wed. and a 6 minute live pitch session including Q&A on Wednesday in front of the panel of judges, angel investors, VCs industry thought leaders, peers, media and relevant SemTech attendees.

The more comprehensive your company profile is, the more likely you are to get votes, followers, ratings and be reviewed, all valuable to advance to the final Live Pitch round. The Grand Prize Winner will receive a prize package worth over $12,000 including a 2012 SemTech West Silver Sponsorship (priced at $7,000) a 30-minute speaking slot on the official 2012 SemTech West program (Valued at $3,500, one conference pass (priced at $1,795)
Rules on how to win:
The first round consists of a popular vote, which will whittle down the field to the top 10 competitors.
The second round consists of a formal 6 minute pitch including Q&A culminating in the judges' vote. The judges will score companies between 1 and 10 on multiple criteria. The combined judges’ vote (80% weighting) and popular vote (20%) weighting will determine the Grand Prize Winner.
