It's time for the Vator video Elevator Pitch portion of the 2009 Business Plan Competition at The Merage School of Business, one of the nation's premier business plan competitions offering all UC Irvine students, staff and researchers the opportunity to form a team, create a business plan and potentially fund their business idea all within seven months.

Any seasoned entrepreneur will tell you that one of the biggest challenges startups face is building an audience and creating awareness about an emerging product or service. But that's reality!

Even if you have a rock solid idea and business plan, if you can't get fans or followers, you might not succeed.

That's what the Vator pitch portion is for. It tests which startups can prove they can win over the court of public opinion.

The winner of this portion - which starts April 27th and ends April 29th - can win up to $1500.

Who can enter? Semi-finalists from the 2009 Business Plan compet ition. There are already 17 semi-finalists. If you're not one of these, this competition is not for you.

How to win? The startup with the most votes wins $1000 and the startup with the most followers wins $500. Every startup must have a Vator company profile and that profile must be entered into the competition. If you are a finalist and you are not entered into the competition, create your profile, then go to the competition page, and hit "Participate in competition."

How to get votes and followers: Invite your friends/fans to follow your company by hitting the "invite followers" yellow button in the middle of your company profile under company admins and followers. See example on the right.

Good luck to all the startup teams! Remember, once the competition is over, you can still use your Vator company profile to give updates about your progress.
