"Our own life has to be our message." -Thich Nhat Hanh
GirlTrek is a health movement. Tens of thousands of Black women and girls work together to develop healthy habits, redefine cultural traditions and contribute to broader conversations about health in America. We change our lives. That's our message. Each year, we organize a national walking campaign, serve as healthy role models and venture out together - to learn new skills and experience healthy living at its best. GirlTrek partners with schools, churches and organizations to inspire and prepare ordinary women to advocate for their families and communities. Our innovation, hard work and grassroots leadership will change the national conversation about health in America.
GirlTrek is a national non-profit organization, with a network of over 50,000 women and girls.
Our health agenda is inspired by Harriet Tubman's model of change. She served as a beacon. She freed herself and family, developed requisite skills and expertise, created a network of diverse supporters and changed the national dialogue. GirlTrek seeks to become a powerful, grassroots network of active women who model healthy living by changing their habits and family traditions. Together, we will advocate for healthier African American communities and inform health policy conversations at local and national levels. GirlTrek puts the put the "move" back in movement.
How? GirlTrek provides low-cost physical activity, social support and tailored health education and training. Our program includes a national 10-week walking campaign (WALK!), a service oriented Healthy Role Model program (SERVE!) and a series of skill-building retreats, conferences and on-site training. (DISCOVER!).
