About
Company description
Akcel will be a key provider of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) based optical engine for embedded projectors. Unlike the existing products made from other technologies such as LCD, LCoS, MMD, Akcel's State-of-The-Art, scanning mirror display (SMD-A) design is an innovation that has major technology paradigm shift. It offers the smallest size, least cost, lowest power consumption, and other advanced features such as speckle reduction and automated image correction. Therefore, Akcel's SMD technology will be the winner leading the future market because it is the most suitable for mobile devices for low cost and high performances for the end users.
Team

Akcel team has multidisciplinary technical and business experts with excellent track record. All key members served as CEO, CTO, or VP of Engineering of companies in prominent Silicon Valley high tech companies. They have brought unique products to the market with extensive technical expertise and competency in MEMS and laser design and fabrication, as well as optical, mechanical, thermal and electrical integration. For instance, one key member led the team which brought the first MEMS based optoelectronic product (Variable Optical Attenuator) from ground zero to commercialization with only $13M in three years. Together, they have contributed to about 200 publications in leading technical journals and more than 100 issued or pending patents. On the business side, Akcel has strong product and business management expertise in displays, information technology products, and strong international business links, especially with China and Taiwan.

Business model

Akcel will develop, manufacture and sell embedded MEMS based projectors directly to the cell phone brands.  Ultimately Akcel can develop its own brand and create high entry bar for its competitors due to the proprietary nature of its key MEMS and laser components. This unique position affords Akcel a direct path to market, enables Akcel to incorporate best-of-breed component technology into its engine architectures, and makes it easy for cell phone brands to incorporate projection display into their products. Exclusive MEMS and optical engine technologies, the freedom of choosing among key component suppliers, the control of engine architecture and component margins will sustain the company's direct path to market.

Competitive advantage

Lucrative target market (in billions of dollars) and proven track of record management and execution team that designs and develops the most innovative pico projectors with the following advantages:

  • High quality images with adjustable spatial resolution
  • Speckle reduction
  • Geometric image corrections with always being in focus
  • Significantly lower power consumption due to the best optical efficiency
  • No subpixels required to generate color and/or gray scale
  • Unique packaging designs and wafer level processes yielding low cost and reliability
