Business model
WeAre.Us offer much of the same capability set as larger social
networks like MySpace, Facebook, but within a walled garden in which
users know they are sharing private details of their trials and
tribulations with only those that can genuinely relate and understand,
with tools geared towards support and health tracking, and with
branding engendering a sense of trust and community.
One of our sites, WeAreCrohns.org, is a site for those afflicted with
Crohn's Disease, Colitis, and IBS - very private, bowel-related
conditions. The level of openness and sharing (suffice it to say that
they share more than those outside of this community would ever care to
hear) is absolutely stunning. This level of openness has only been
achieved by providing users with an environment in which they protected
in a manner impossible on a larger social network.
We receive daily notes expressing the life-changing nature of our sites
from users. Lisa Kuban, a user on WeAreCrohns.org, blogs "It is like
someone has thrown me a lifeline. I read the profiles of the people
here and some of the posts and I think, Wow - people like me, people
with my similar problems, people who get it, have it, survive it and
live with it". Marybeth Loneee writes to us, "Do you guys really have a
clue what this site is starting to mean to people in such a short time?
None of us here can really describe the wonderful undercurrent of
positive vibes we are getting from the site and each other."
WeAreCrohns.org has been running since December 2007, and is rapidly approaching 4000 users.
Within the WeAre.Us universe, we also have vibrant communities for
Diabetes (WeAreDiabetic.org), Huntington's Disease (WeAreHD.org),
Cancer (CancerCancer.org), and many more planned for the very near
future. The possibilities for us are endless, and we intend to expand
across the range of medical conditions so that ultimately, WeAre.Us is
a destination where anyone afflicted by a medical condition can find an
inclusive and supportive community.
Monetization is primarily via corporate sponsorship and data mining,
particularly within the pharmaceuticals industry, but also associated
patient care segments. The unique focus and demographics of the
WeAre.Us communities command premium CPM rates for both advertising and
corporate sponsorship. Additionally, health tracker and anonymized
qualitative data is available for research and marketing analysis by
pharmaceutical companies and research centers.
